{ Omar, the Love-ster... VERSION 1 }

 

Materials
- 2.50 mm crochet hook
- 100 % cotton yarn for a 2.50 mm hook (8/4)
- A pair of safety eyes of 8 mm
- Tapestry needle and pins
- Soft stuffing, like polyfiber fill   
 

Abbreviations (US Terms)
st = stitch
ch = chain stitch
slst = slip stitch
sc = single crochet

You will need:
Coral yarn for the body and pale pink yarn for the scarf. 
I use 100% cotton yarn (8/4 – Fingering).


Finished size: 
If crocheted with a 2.50 mm hook, your finished Omar should measure more or less 18 cm tall. 
Of course, should you choose a different hook and yarn, the final size will vary...
 


Ready? Let's begin!

Body
Using coral yarn…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 6 times (18)
4. Crochet 1 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *2 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 1 sc (24)
5. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 6 times (30)
6. Crochet 2 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 2 sc (36)
7. Crochet *5 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 6 times (42)
8. to 10. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
11. Crochet 3 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *6 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 3 sc (48)
12. to 25. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Place the safety eyes between the rounds 19 and 20, with a distance of 9 stitches and embroider the cheeks with a bit of pale pink yarn. 
26. Crochet 3 sc, one decrease, *6 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 3 sc (42)
27. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
28. Only through front loops, crochet 1 sc in each stitch
29. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Fasten of yarn and weave in ends. 


Abdomen - layer 2
Place the body head down and join the coral yarn in the first back loop of round 28 of the body.


1. Crochet 1 sc in the first back loop of round 28 of the body (42)
2. Crochet *5 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 6 times (36)
3. to 6. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Start stuffing the body and continue doing so as you go…
7. Only through front loops, crochet 1 sc in each stitch
8. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Fasten of yarn and weave in ends. 


Abdomen - Layer 3
Still with the body head down and join the coral yarn in the first back loop of round 7 of the previous layer….
1. Crochet 1 sc in the first back loop of round 7 of the layer 2 (36)
2. Crochet 2 sc, one decrease, *4 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 2 sc (30)
3. to 6. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Keep stuffing…
7. Only through front loops, crochet 1 sc in each stitch
8. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Fasten of yarn and weave in ends. 


Tail
Still with the body head down and join the coral yarn in the first back loop of round 7 of the previous layer….
1. Crochet 1 sc in the first back loop of round 7 of the layer 3 (30)
2. Crochet *3 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 6 times (24)
3. to 5. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Stuff some more…
6. Crochet 1 sc, one decrease, *2 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 1 sc (18)
7. and 8. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
9. Crochet *1 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 6 times (12)
10. and 11. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
12. Crochet 6 decreases
Fasten off yarn, close the last round through the front loops and weave in ends.


Little legs
Make four, using coral yarn…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet *2 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * twice (8)
No need to stuff the leg…
3. to 7. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
8. Press the opening with your fingers, aligning 4 stitches side by side and sc together the corresponding stitches, 1 sc into each pair of stitches.
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew the legs to the body. 

Fins of the tail
Make three, using coral yarn…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. to 7. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
No need to stuff the fin…
8. Crochet 6 decreases
Fasten off yarn, close the last round through the front loops and leave a long tail to sew to the tail.
 
Heart claws
Make two, using coral yarn…

Piece 1
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 6 times (18)
4. to 6. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

Piece 2
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 6 times (18)
4. to 6. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch

DO NOT FASTEN OFF YARN… Let’s join both pieces.

7. With Piece 2 still on your hook, take Piece 1 and crochet 1 sc in any stitch of Piece 1. Place a stitch marker here since this will be the beginning of the next rounds. 


Crochet further 17 sc along Piece 1 and then jump to Piece 2 to crochet 18 sc along Piece 2 (36)
8. Crochet *7 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 4 times (32)
9. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
10. Crochet 3 sc, one decrease, *6 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 3 times, 3 sc (28)
Start stuffing…
11. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
12. Crochet *5 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 4 times (24)
13. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
14. Crochet 2 sc, one decrease, *4 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 3 times, 2 sc (20)

Stuff the arm…
32. Press the opening with your fingers. Crochet the necessary sc so that when you close the arm, the closing row of stitches ends up being perpendicular to the heart claws. Once you achieved this, align 4 stitches side by side and sc together the corresponding stitches, 1 sc into each pair of stitches.
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Antennae
Make two, using coral yarn….
1. Leaving a long initial tail, chain 17 ch stitches. Starting from the second chain from hook, crochet 1 slst into each ch stitch (16).
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew.

Scarf
Using pale pink yarn… The scarf is also worked in rows, not in rounds…
1. Crochet 81 ch stitches. Starting in the second ch from hook, crochet 1 sc in each ch stitch (60). Chain 1 and turn.
2. to 5. Only through back loops, crochet 1 sc in each st. 
Fasten off and weave in ends. 

Assembly
- Sew the fins to the tail.
- Sew two legs to each side of the body, on the layer 2 of the abdomen.
- Sew the antennae to the tip of the head.
- Sew the heart claws to the sides of the body, between rounds 26 and 27. But to avoid them falling to the sides, secure the arms with some stitches along the head. Weave in all ends.
- Tie the scarf around the neck.
