Materials
- 2.50 mm crochet hook
- 3.00 mm crochet hook (for the chenille yarn)
- Mercerized cotton yarn – 4 ply
- Chenille yarn DK weight
- A pair of 6 mm safety eyes
- Tapestry needle
- Polyfiber fill
Abbreviations (US Terms):
st = stitch
ch = chain stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
You will need:
Mercerized Cotton. I used Scheepjes’ Catona (mercerized cotton - 4 ply):
Beige for the skin (#505 Linen)
Dark Brown for the eye spots (#507 Chocolate)
Yellow for the scarf (#208 Yellow Gold)
Oh! And a bit of pink (#507 Fresia) to embroider his cheeks and of black (#110 Jet Black) to embroider the nose.
Then, for the fur, you’ll need light brown Chenille. I used Scheepjes’ Little Darling Chenille yarn DK weight (#404 Teddy Bear)
Finished size:
From head to toe, your finished sloth measures 24 cm approximately.
Of course, should you choose a different hook and yarn, final measures will vary.

Eye spots
Make two, using dark brown (mercerized cotton) and your 2.50 mm crochet hook…
1. Chain 15 ch stitches. Starting from the second chain from hook, crochet 1 sc in the following 13 ch stitches and then 4 sc in the last st of the chain. This will allow you to turn and work on the other side of the chain. Crochet 1 sc in each of the remaining 13 loops of the other side of the chain. Chain 1 and turn.
2. Crochet 13 sc, 4 increases, 13 sc. Chain 1 and turn.
3. Crochet 15 sc, 1 increase, 3 sc, 1 increase, 14 sc.
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew. Set aside.
Body & Head
Start with brown chenille and your 3.00 mm crochet hook…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. Crochet 2 sc in each st (24)
4. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 6 times (30)
5. Crochet 2 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 2 sc (36)
6. to 12. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
13. Crochet 2 sc, one decrease, *4 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 2 sc (30)
14. to 16. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
17. Crochet *3 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 6 times (24)
18. to 20. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Start stuffing the body…
21. Crochet 1 sc, one decrease, *2 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 1 sc (18)
22. and 23. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Now, change your hook and start using your 2.50 mm hook.
24. Change to beige (mercerized cotton) and, only through back loops, crochet 1 sc in each st
25. Crochet 2 sc in each stitch (36)
26. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 18 times (54)
27. Crochet 4 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *8 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 4 sc (60)
27. to 43. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Place one safety eye into each eye spot and then place them together between rounds 31 and 32 of the head, with a distance of 10 stitches between the safety eyes. No need to sew the spots now. We’ll do this after finishing the head.
44. Crochet 5 sc, one decrease, *8 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 4 sc (54)
45. Crochet *7 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 6 times (48)
46. Crochet 3 sc, one decrease, *6 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 3 sc (42)
47. Crochet *5 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 6 times (36)
Start stuffing the head…
48. Crochet 2 sc, one decrease, *4 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 2 sc (30)
49. Crochet *3 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 6 times (24)
50. Crochet 1 sc, one decrease, *2 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 5 times, 1 sc (18)
Stuff some more…
51. Crochet *1 sc, one decrease*, repeat * 6 times (12)
52. Crochet 6 decreases (6)
Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
* Now sew the eye spots to the head. Then using a bit of black yarn, embroider the nose and with pink embroider the cheeks into the spots.
Fur cap
Using brown chenille and your 3.00 mm crochet hook…
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (18)
4. Crochet 1 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *2 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 1 sc (24)
5. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (30)
6. Crochet 2 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 2 sc (36)
7. Crochet *5 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (42)
8. Crochet 3 sc, 2 sc in the next st, *6 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * 5 times, 3 sc (48)
9. to 19. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
Try the fur cap to the head of your sloth. Does it cover the straight back edges of the eye spots? Then it’s perfect. If not, crochet an extra round or two.
20. Crochet 1 hdc, 1 hdc + 1 dc + 1 hdc all together in the next stitch, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Leave the rest of the stitches unworked.
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew to the head.
* Sew the fur cap to the head, covering the straight back edges of the eye spots.
Little hairs
Make two, using brown chenille and your 3.00 mm crochet hook…
1. Leaving a long inital tail, crochet 5 chain stithes. Starting from the second chain from hook, crochet 1 sc in each st (4).
Fasten off yarn, leaving another long tail to sew to the fur cap.
* Sew the two hairs to the tip of the fur cap.
Arms
Make two, using brown chenille and your 3.00 mm crochet hook…
1. Make 2 chain stitches. Crochet 4 sc in the second chain from hook.
2. Crochet 2 sc in each stitch (8)
3. to 19. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
No need to stuff the arms…
20. Press the opening with your fingers and crochet together, with sc, both opposing sides.
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew the arms to the body.
Legs
Make two. Using brown chenille and your 3.00 mm crochet hook…
1. Magic ring of 5 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each stitch (10)
3. to 23. Crochet 1 sc in each stitch
No need to stuff the legs…
24. Press the opening with your fingers, aligning 5 stitches side by side and sc together the corresponding stitches, 1 sc into each pair of stitches.
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew the legs to the body.
* Sew the arms and the legs to the body.
Scarf
Using yellow (mercerized cotton) and your 2.50 mm crochet hook… The scarf is worked in rows…
1. Crochet 101 ch stitches. Starting in the second ch from hook, crochet 1 sc in each ch stitch (100).
2. to 5. Chain 1 and turn. Only through back loops, crochet 1 sc in each stitch.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
* Tie the scarf around the neck of your doll.
