{ Rita, the groundhog... }



Materials
- 3.00 mm crochet hook
- 100 % cotton yarn for a 3.00 mm hook
- A pair of 8 mm safety eyes
- Tapestry needle
- Polyfiber fill  

Colors
- One color for her fur
- Seven colors for her sweater. I used: pink, lilac, yellow, light green, dark green, light blue and blue.
- A tiny bit of black and white yarn to embroider the nose and teeth.

Abbreviations
st = stitch
ch = chain
slst = slip stitch
sc = single crochet

Head + Body
Start with the color of her fur…
1. Start with a magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (18)
4. Crochet *2 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (24)
5. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (30)
6. Crochet *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (36)
7. Crochet *5 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (42)
8. to 18. Crochet 42 sc
19. Crochet 10 sc, *1 decrease, 2 sc*, repeat * 5 times, 1 decrease and, finally, 10 sc (36)
20. Crochet 10 sc, *1 decrease, 1 sc*, repeat * 5 times, 1 decrease and, finally, 9 sc (30)
21. to 23. Crochet 30 sc
24. Crochet *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (36)
Place the safety eyes between rounds 14 and 15 and embroider the nose and teeth between the eyes. With a bit of pink, embroider the cheeks below the eyes...
25. Change to lilac and, only through back loops, crochet 36 sc

27. Change to yellow and crochet 36 sc
Start stuffing the body and continue doing so as you go...

Ears
Make 2, using the color of her fur…

Close and break the yarn. leaving a long tail to sew to the head. 


Arms
Make 2, using the color of her fur..
1. Start with a magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. to 6. Crochet 12 sc
No need to stuff the arms
7. Press the opening with your fingers and single crochet together each pair of stitches to close the  opening (6). 
Close and break the yarn, leaving a long tail to sew to the body. 

Legs
Make 2, using the color of her fur..
1. Start with a magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. to 7. Crochet 12 sc
No need to stuff the legs…
8. Press the opening with your fingers and single crochet together each pair of stitches to close the  opening (6). 
Close and break the yarn, leaving a long tail to sew to the body.

Tail
Using the color of her fur…
1. Start with a magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (18)
4. to 8. Crochet 18 sc
9. Crochet *1 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (12)
10. to 13. Crochet 12 sc
No need to stuff it
14. Press the opening with your fingers and single crochet together each pair of stitches to close the  opening (6). 
Close and break the yarn, leaving a long tail to sew to the body.

Cowl
Using pink... IMPORTANT! The cowl is not crocheted in round but in rows!
1. Chain 5 ch stitches. Starting from the second chain from hook, crochet 1 sc in each remaining ch stitch (4 sc)
2. to 22. Chain 1 and turn. ONLY THROUGH BACK LOOPS, crochet 4 sc
Check the length of the cowl against the neck of your Rita. If needed, add one or two more rows. Close and break the yarn, leaving a long tail to sew.


Assembly
- Sew the ears to the head.
- Sew the arms to the body, between rounds 28 and 29.
- Sew legs to the base of the body.
- Sew the tail to the back of the body.
- Place the cowl around the neck of your Rita and sew the ends together.
- Weave in all ends inside your doll.
