{ Mandy, the Mandrake... }

 


Materials for the mandrake
- 2.00 mm crochet hook 
100 % cotton yarn for a 2.00 mm hook (fingering / super fine)

- A pair of 6 mm safety eyes

- Tapestry needle

- Polyfiber fill  


Colors for the mandrake
One color for her skin
- Brown
- Dark brown
- Different shades of green, ochres and yellows for the leaves
A bit of pink yarn to embroider the cheeks

Materials for the pot
- 4.00 mm crochet hook 
- 100 % cotton yarn for a 4.00 mm hook (thick) in the color of choice. I used two colors for a very simple reason:  I ran out of the yarn with which I started. You can crochet your pot with two colors or just one.

st = stitch

ch = chain

slst = slip stitch

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

dc = double crochet

Leg 1 
Start with brown...

1. Magic ring of 5 sc

2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (10)

3. to 6. Crochet 10 sc

Close and break the yarn. Set aside.

Leg 2 + Body
Start with brown...

1. Magic ring of 5 sc

2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (10)

3. to 6. Crochet 10 sc


DO NOT BREAK THE YARNNow we will start with the body

Body
7. Chain 2 and join LEG 1. Crochet 10 sc on leg 1 and then crochet 2 sc on one of the sides of the 2-ch-chain. Now crochet 10 sc on leg 2, and finally 2 sc on the other side of the 2-ch-chain. Total stitches: 24

8. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (30)

9. to 14. Corchet 30 sc

Stuff the little legs firmly
15. Change to dark brown (belt) and, only through back loops, crochet 30 sc
16. Crochet *3 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (24)
17. Change back to brown and, only through back loops, crochet 24 sc
18. and 19. Crochet 24 sc
20. Crochet *2 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (18)
Stuff the body firmly...

Hood
Using brown
1. Start with a magic ring of 6 sc

2. Crochet *2 sc in each st*, repeat * (12)

5. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (30)

Close and break the yarn, leaving a long tail to sew to the head.

Skirt
Turn your doll head down and insert the brown yarn in one of the remaining front loops of round 15 of the body, right on the back of your mandrake…
1. Crochet 1 sc in each front loop of round 15 of the body (30)
2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (60)
3. Crochet *2 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (80)
4. and 5. Crochet 80 sc
Close, break the yarn and weave in ends.

Arms
Make two, using brown
1. Make 2 chain stitches. Crochet 4 sc in the second chain from hook.

2. Crochet 2 sc in each stitch (8)

3. to 13. Crochet 8 sc

No need to stuff the arms...
14. Press the opening with your fingers and single crochet together both opposing sides. 

Close. Break the yarn and leave a long tail to sew arms to body.

Short roots
Make 8, using brown
1. Chain 5.
Close and break the yarn, leaving a long tail to sew. 

Long roots
Make 4, using brown
1. Chain 8.
Close and break the yarn, leaving a long tail to sew.

Leaves
Make 8, using different shades of green and ochres

1. Chain 15 ch stitches. Starting from the second chain from hook, crochet 1 slst, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, 1 slst, 3 slst in the last st of the chain. This will allow you to turn and work on the other side of the chain. Crochet 1 slst, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, 2 slst.

Close with a slst in the first stitch you’ve made and break the yarn, leaving a long tail to sew.



Assembly of your Mandrake
- Embroider some hairlocks to the forehead of your Mandrake, using your tapestry needle and dark brown yarn.
- Sew the hood to the head and then sew the leaves to the hood. 
Sew the arms to the sides of the body.
- Sew the roots to the limbs: two short roots and one large root to each arm and leg.  
- Weave in all ends inside your doll.



Pot
NOTE: remember that to crochet this pot you need to change your hook and use a 4.00 mm one, with the corresponding yarn calling. If you don't do so, your mandrake won't fit inside…
1. Start with a magic ring of 6 sc

2. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
3. Crochet 2 sc in each st (24)
4. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (30)
5. Only through back loops, crochet 30 s
6. to 8. Crochet 30 sc
9. Crochet *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (36)
10. to 19. Crochet 36 sc
20. (If you want your pot to have two colors, then make the color change before starting this round). Crochet 36 sc
21. to 29. Crochet 36 sc
Close, break the yarn and weave in ends. Turn the edge of your pot towards the outside.
