This is MIKO and he’s a great companion to hold whenever a nightmare comes along. You’ll notice that none of his limbs are alike. MIKO is perfectly imperfect, as we all are! No symmetry here. Just marvelous differences that make him unique. Like you. Like me. Like all of us.
Materials
- 4 mm crochet hook (US G)
- 100 % cotton yarn for a 4 mm hook
- Fluffy yarn, like chenille (I used one ball of Katia Bambi), to be used also with a 4 mm hook
- Tapestry needle
- Polyfiber fill
Abbreviations (US Terms)
st = stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
You'll need:
A color for the body/clothes and beannie (Chenille) and a color for the skin (100% cotton). Oh! And a bit of brown to embroider the eyes and some hair locks.
Finished size:
From head to toe, Miko measures 35 cm approximately.
Of course, should you choose a different hook and yarn, final measures will vary…
NOTE: This doll is a great sleeping companion. That's why you should not stuff the body very much. We will just stuff it enough to make it squeezable. But the head, though, needs to be stuffed firmly, that's why we'll crochet a "lid" between the body and the head, so the stuffing from the head won't "fall" down to the body...
Ready?
Let's crochet the lid first...
Lid
Using the color you chose for the skin (I used 100% cotton).
1. Magic ring of 6 sc
2. Crochet 2 scin each st (12)
3. Crochet *1 sc, 2 scin the next st*, repeat * (18)
Close and break the yarn. Set aside.
Body
Start with the color you chose for the "clothes" (I used one ball of chenille yarn by Katia Bambi). NOTE: I found it hard to start with a magic ring using the fluffy chenille yarn. So I've always started with 2 chains...
1. Make 2 chain stitches. Crochet 6 sc in the second chain from hook.
2. Crochet 2 scin each st (12)
3. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (18)
4. Crochet *2 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (24)
5. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (30)
6. Crochet *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (36)
7. Crochet *5 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (42)
8. Crochet *6 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (48)
9. to 12. Crochet 48 sc
13. Crochet *6 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (42)
14. to 16. Crochet 42 sc
17. Crochet *5 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (36)
18. to 20. Crochet 36 sc
21. Crochet *4 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (30)
22. to 23. Crochet 30 sc
Stuff the body, but not too much. Just a bit to give it shape...
24. Crochet *3 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (24)
25. to 26. Crochet 24 sc
27. Crochet *2 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (18)
28. to 29. Crochet 18 sc
30. ATTENTION. Now take the "lid" piece and fit it in the opening of the body, so that one stitch of the opening faces one stitch of the "lid" (they both have 18 stitches). Now, change to the color of the skin (100% cotton) and, only through back loops, crochet 18 sc, joining at the same time one stitch of the opening with one stitch of the "lid".
DON'T BREAK THE YARN! We will go on with the head…
Head
31. Crochet *2 sc in each st*, repeat * (36)
32. Crochet *8 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (40)
33. to 43. Crochet 40 sc
Use a bit of brown yarn to embroider the eyes between rounds 36 and 37 of the head, with a distance of 5 stitches...
44. Crochet *8 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (36)
45. Crochet *4 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (30)
46. Crochet *3 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (24)
{Start stuffing the head firmly.}
47. Crochet *2 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (18)
48. Crochet *1 sc, one decrease*, repeat * (12)
{Stuff the head a bit more. It should be firm...}
49. Crochet 6 decreases (6)
Close. Break the yarn and weave in ends.
Beanie
The beanie is also crocheted with the chenille yarn…
1. Make 2 chain stitches. Crochet 6 sc in the second chain from hook.
2. Crochet 6 sc
3. Crochet 2 sc in each st (12)
4. Crochet 12 sc
5. Crochet *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (18)
6. Crochet 18 sc
7. Crochet *2 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (24)
8. Crochet 24 sc
9. Crochet *3 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (30)
10. Crochet *4 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (36)
11. Crochet *5 sc, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat * (42)
12. to 24. Crochet 42 sc
